From Brayden's Mommy:

For Brayden's first Christmas we were in search of gifts because what really do you get a 2 month old?!  I was at the store and I saw a no sew fleece Cars blanket, never making one before and being in the mood to be crafty I figured I would give it a try and give it to Brayden for Christmas   After what took 2 days and about 6 hours the blanket was finally complete.  The fringes were crooked and the knots looked weird but I was proud of finishing something I set out to do and figured he was to little to care anyways.  To my surprise he LOVED his blanket.  He pulled and chewed on the fringes and within a few days he couldn't nap or go to bed without it!
Brayden's Cars blanket has gotten so much use that I figured he needed another one so that when Cars got washed he wouldn't have a total fit!  The theme of his first birthday was Elmo, who he absolutely loves, so I set out to the fabric store in search of Elmo fabric.  There were tons of different patterns and instead of getting a no sew kit I figured I would try to do this all on my own with no precut matching pieces.  Compared to Cars this Elmo blanket looked fantastic, the pieces were as straight as they were going to get and I even tried a new knot which was way more attractive then just tying the pieces together.
As I was doing the Elmo blanket I had learned of a little boy who needed a heart-lung transplant but wouldn't be listed and had heard that he loved Elmo as well.  Then it dawned on me when Brayden was in the hospital for his heart surgery he held onto those fringes on his Cars blanket like they were the only things keeping him comfort, so then I thought other kids might find comfort in them too.  After thinking about what to call the blankets, I finally realized that the knots are what hold the fabric together therefore representing strength and the fringes are like a representation of all the people out there praying and thinking about these kids.  The term "strength blanket" was coined and the sweet little boy in need of the heart-lung transplant received the very first strength blanket in one of his favorite characters...Elmo.

The Story Behind the Strength Blanket

The result of sending the very first Elmo blanket is the Strong Kids Program.  If you have a child who has a life altering medical condition like a heart defect, mitochondrial defect, or cancer please feel free to contact us to have the child receive their very own strength blanket and a specialized card from Brayden.  If you provide the child's birthday they will also receive a card on their special day.
